The short explanation of this alert was:
The Auto Alliance, the lobbyist group representing most major automakers, has launched a deceptive new ad campaign in Washington DC claiming, "Autos manufactured today are virtually emission-free." Not only are today's passenger vehicles emitting more global warming pollution than 20 years ago, but some vehicles made in 2005 will have forty times the smog-forming emissions of a Ford Escape Hybrid or Toyota Prius. Using factual omissions to hide polluting emissions is unacceptable. Please contact the Federal Trade Commission and ask that they immediately open a false advertising investigation on the Alliance.
